As unbelievable as it may seem, Halloween is only eight short weeks away already and that time is set to shrink rapidly the closer we get. So let’s look at one of the quintessential aspects of that particular seasonal holiday which is the original reason why it exists and why people love to dress up in witch costumes for Halloween.

It seems like the summer only just got going and those hot, balmy days and nights meant parties by the pool and barbecues on the patio or terrace. And now we’re at the end of August already looking down the barrel of the Fall months as September is upon us. That means if you want to be wearing the latest, best and most exclusive witch costumes for this season, you had better get online and be doing your research NOW!

That’s because the best costumes tend to sell out sooner than the rest and if you really have your eye on a particular design that isn’t going to resemble the run of the mill outfits that everyone else is going to be wearing at this years mega party, then you want to be doing your ordering as soon as you can. But that is beside the point as we were going to look at why we want to dress up as a witch on Halloween.

Of course, the holiday itself is a pagan celebration of the Wiccan date of All Hallows Eve, which is an important one on the calendar for all practicing witches. Now, most real witches do not go dressing up in long black gowns, wearing pointy hats and riding through the night on a broomstick! They are more likely quite ordinary looking people who probably live in your street and work at normal jobs so you wouldn’t even know it that they were in any way associated with the wholly natural religion of Wicca.

Witches are also generally good people who use their knowledge of nature and the natural world to live in harmony and peace with the world. It seems a much better way than everyone else who is scrabbling over each other to grab whatever they can get whether they need it or not!

So spare a thought for the real reason for Halloween and remember that you are dressing up in the theatrical image of a witch as portrayed more by Hollywood than reality, like so much of life tends to be these days! Have a great party!

Do You Make Or Buy A Headboard?

It appears that one of the more popular home handyman tasks that you might like to attempt in your workshop is the headboard. And if you are going to create a headboard it might as well be a king size headboard. Although there are plenty of king size headboards for sale, the thinking must be that your basic headboard is simply a piece of wood that sits behind the bed up against the wall. Once you’ve got the basic dimensions worked out it should be a simple matter of cutting it out and Bob’s your uncle.

Obviously there will be some upholstery or similar kind of decorating to ensure it blends in with the rest of the décor but for the main part a simple headboard shouldn’t take a lot more work than that.

Not being particularly handy I can’t really say whether it would be a simple task or not. What I do know is that it doesn’t really take a lot of effort to jump in the car and drive to the local furniture warehouse and pick out a suitable headboard from the selection found there. If I can buy a perfectly good king size headboard I doubt I’d try to turn my hand to making my own.

Expensive Is Not Always Best

Many people think that just because a fountain pen looks fantastic on the outside and that it costs a lot of money it must be a good pen to write with. When looking for a Parker Sonnet fountain pen for sale I came across a number of reviews. A disturbing number of them were similar in tone and opinion as the one that has been reproduced below.

At first glance, it seems to be a rebranded fancy kid’s toy. To close inspection, it is actually quite beautiful and detailed in its chiseled silver pattern and gold trim. The black lacquer cap jewel has spaces around the circumference – not sure why this was put in. I sealed it with soy candle wax so it smells good and prevents it from drying out at the same time. Back to the point, it is actually gorgeous – the nib, the three blended colors of gold, silver, and black, everything.

Normally for a pen to be used in my rotation, the nib must write well, better than it looks. Unluckily, this nib is sub-par with its beautiful finish. It may look nice but it doesn’t write nearly as well as it looks. The most important part of a pen is how it writes. Too bad this pen doesn’t write nearly as well as my cheap & ugly Parker Frontier.
